Exercise

How often do we read how important exercise is to our health. It’s not just a new craze. Few of you are old enough to remember President Kennedy’s program for testing our physical fitness, now we have Michelle Obama. Every fad diet, every doctor’s plan, and every health program has an exercise component. Exercise is a huge industry.

There are also specific exercises for just about every organ and part of your body – your heart, your lungs, your brain, your abs, and your arms, legs, and even one’s skin. Think I’m kidding about skin, how many magazine pages are devoted to “healthy skin.”

Yet, for most of us we forget one important part that needs exercise even though it involves little in the way of calorie burn. It is our soul. Our soul needs exercise just as much as the rest of our organs and muscles. How do we accomplish this – prayer. The essence of prayer is soul hunger – a yearning after oneness with the eternal. It is the breath of the spiritual nature, the native air of the soul. It is a vital law in man’s nature that this highest faculty be exercised.
