Lenten Discipline

It is hard to believe, but in little more than a week your mind will turn to pancakes (Shrove Tuesday). I don’t think I’ll ever forget my first Shrove Tuesday Supper at Trinity Episcopal. Mike S. enlisted me to join the kitchen crew where I remained until we moved to DC. I know now churches have Chili or spaghetti, but give me a stack of pancakes any time. All that said soon you will hear the words “what are you giving up for Lent.” The Hubbell Pew began as a reaction to that very question. Since it’s a week away and before the question is posed, I suggest you give some thought to your response, and consider its corollary “what are you giving for Lent?”

I leave to more eloquent souls to articulate the benefit of fasting and sacrifice. However let me suggest that giving up chocolate, wine, or cookies is in a way a giving to yourself. Just as work at the homeless shelter, or teaching an adult to read is a giving to others and yourself. I suggest that if you haven’t decided yet about Lent consider “giving something” for Lent the “up” can continue to dangle.
