Monday In the Fifth Week of Lent

“For minds to think, and hearts to love, and hands to serve, We thank you, Lord. – The Book of Common Prayer, p.837

What a wonderful summation of our calling. Most of the time I over think and stew too much. I look for signs of God’s call for me and wait, and wait, and wait. I don’t venture forward, worried I don’t have the qualifications or authority to act against injustice or cruelty. I head to a corner when there is God’s work to be done,  saying surely somebody smarter than me will address this problem, somebody with a purer heart has more credibility, or someone with more money or status will be more successful.

I need to remember an old football drill. The coach would hold a huge canvas dummy, and we were supposed to fire out from a stance, hit the dummy, drive it back, and then drop back down to our stance and repeat the drill up and down the field until exhausted. I can hear my coach yelling – “hit, drive, drop, now repeat!”

During Lent we “Think, Love, Serve, now repeat.”  “Think, Love, Serve, now repeat.”
