Beneath The Surface

The double red flags were out yesterday, and everyone was warned to stay out of the Ocean. Apparently dangerous rip tides had caused a drowning, and the beach officials feared more tragedies. Rip Tides are not something one can see, but are one of the many dangers of the ocean just beneath the surface. This morning a shark and a sting ray swam by close to shore. Again, danger beneath the surface.

Humans sometime have their own dangers floating just below the surface. The individual who hides an addiction, the person who’s loneliness is hidden by a care free attitude, the depressed who never let us inside until they commit suicide are all examples.

As disciples it is part of our responsibility to scratch beneath the surface of our friends, family, and people in our community to detect hidden dangers.  God gives us the tools of love and human kindness to perform this obligation, but it also requires paying attention, a heart full of compassion, and a patient ear.

As we meditate this day, think about your friends and family. Is there a danger lurking beneath the surface, and if you know there is how do you raise a double red flag?
