First Monday in Advent

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. – Hebrews 12:1

Great may the danger near,

Greater are the friends beside us. – Anon

Don’t you love the image of “run with patience.” Wisdom has taught us all that we are not in a sprint, but in a cross-country race that can’t be won, only run. Today marks the beginning of the rest of the race, and its time each and every one of us “ran with patience” the race we were given when we came  into this world.

The author of Hebrews reminds us that we are not alone in our race. We have a cloud of witnesses whose hearts throb with every effort and struggle, and who thrill with joy at each successes. So its time to climb out of the shadows of life, ties up your laces, hitch up your pants, and buckle your chin straps — the race begins right now.
