A Soft Answer

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir anger. – Proverbs 15:1

A soft answer – again we meditate on a phrase in the Bible that carries so much meaning. Try this out sometime soon. When you really want someone’s attention lower your voice. Notice that in the listener’s straining to hear what you say, that they are paying more attention. I always knew when my grandmother’s voice lowered to almost a whisper, I was in big trouble.

But, the phrase, a soft answer, carries multiple meanings and interpretations. It can mean answering a neighbor in a way that conveys gentleness and charity. It can mean conveying bad news in a way and in a manner that although painful to hear is softened by love. It can be answering a call to service in a way that doesn’t draw attention to oneself. As you meditate this morning ask yourself what do the words – a soft answer – mean to you. As you meditate this morning ask yourself today will I respond with – a soft answer.
