Just For the Fun of It

When enemies are at your door

I’ll carry you away from war

If you need help, if you need help

You’re dangling by a string

I’ll share in your suffering

To make you well, to make you well. – D. Fuhrmann, T. Clark, G. Wattenburg, Gone, Gone, Gone.

You might be wondering — Hubbell where are you coming up with music lyrics. Suzy and I attended a regular event here in Charlotte called the Tosco Music Party. It began 25 years ago in John Tosco’s mother’s living room where a group of friends would get together and jam and sing together. The living room has expanded to a sellout crowd of over 1000 people who come four times a year to listen to all kinds of music – a nine year old singing Tomorrow from Annie, a 13 year old cellist, blue grass greats, Brazilian singers, on to 87 year old blues great “Pop” Ferguson, www.popferguson.com. Then to top it off about every five acts the audience stands up and is lead in a sing and dance-along. Trust me it is worth the amazing price of only $20. (The prices are so low because every performer donates his/her time and talent just for the fun of it.)

Readers know I write a lot about helping your neighbor, calling on God in times of trouble or tragedy, or the importance of standing up to injustice. But I never want to give the impression that in doing this you have to wear a hair shirt or get all self-righteous. Every now and then remind yourself that life can be fun. Try it. Walk by a homeless person and instead of dropping a dollar in his hand also shake his hand and introduce yourself. Just for the fun of it. You might be surprised by his/her reaction.

Visit someone who is in need and bake them some cookies even though it may not be what they need, and when asked why you are taking the time respond, “Just for the fun of it.” Do something totally out of character “just for the fun of it,” and you will find that passing on pure pleasure and joy is one of God’s greatest gifts. And when it is all said and done your heart and soul will sing along  – “just for the fun of it.”
