Advent 15

Then Mary said, “here I am, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” — Luke 1:38

Ever stop to think what the world would be like if Mary had just said — “No, thanks.” The gospels only a hint of what Mary faced in the way of social acceptance and remaining popular, much less fearing what Joseph’s reaction would be. But we don’t have to wonder what would have happened if she had said no, because she didn’t and the rest is history. She made one hell of a daring choice and her risk should inspire us each to do the same.
There will be times in each of our lives when we face a choice that offers transformation and another that is popular and convenient. Probably there have already been times when you faced such a choice, if you chose convenience don’t beat yourself up, another choice is right around the corner. What is important is the next time you take a lesson from Mary — choose transformation. No matter how unpopular and socially unacceptable the choice of transformation may be, its reward is far greater. In fact it can change the world.
