A very interesting question, Webb, and one that one of our teachers – a physicist also, by the way – addressed recently. I took notes and am still trying to get my mind around it…. He says that with accelerating, deep change occurring on all levels in our world, it is more important than ever to keep our life mission in front of us. That requires that we extend our skills in holding a “radical attention to our intentions.” In the absence of leading an intention-guided life, nothing happens, there is no progress.
He cited science that shows that humans typically progress during the day through thoughts, followed by feelings, followed by the next thought, and the resultant feeling, and on an on. However, that parade does not truly define who we are… or can be. The mind can progress from “pre-rational” (youth) to “rational” then to the Intuitive mind, and ultimately to “transnational knowing.” We can train ourselves to “drop into” transrational knowing… The rational mind, which we value highly in Western culture, is invested in “figuring it out” and is invested in the past. It operates at, in a relative sense, 500 mph, while the Intuitive Mind operates at 5,000 mpg and the transnational mind is several orders of magnitude faster yet and (hold on! I grapple with this) can access the entire non-local, all-time field including the future!).
Ok, to your question, our teacher says to access the transrational mind, one needs to interrupt the thoughts-to-feelings parade and “drop in” to what is essentially the floor of grounded reality. That means stopping the thought-feelings sequence, emptying the mind of all thought and feelings while holding “radical attention to our intention.” To do that effectively requires practice…. he recommended starting with short attempts, clearing the mind of thoughts and feelings and counting backwards to yourself from 10 to 0 (I guess that’s not a thought). Then increasing the time as you gain proficiency… and the result brings one deeply to the present where one can access new levels of knowing. He points out than in our commitment to a rational mind, we are giving attention… and thus life force … to thoughts that essentially come from our past and serve to take energy and to make our lives more complex than they need to be… and further complicating our path through the deeply changing environment.
