First, my sincere apologies about the reference yesterday to a hymn I couldn’t remember. My dear friend Janice sent me the link to it http://www.hymntime.com/tch/htm/o/n/c/oncetoev.htm. Can you believe I forgot that it was Once to Every Man and Nation? One of Suzy’s absolute favorites. Reading the words today, I think they are worthy of more than one meditation. Take a minute to click on the link and thank you Janice. W.
When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified saying, “It is a ghost!” — Matthew 14:26
Years ago, my friend Max who is an accomplished sailor would take me out to Lake Maumelle for a sail. On rare occasions, a storm might appear and the sailing might get rough, but probably nothing like that day on the Sea of Galilee.
I can only imagine what I would have thought if we looked out and seen our friend William Ketcher calmly walking on the water. I might indeed think I had seen a ghost.
Many people think of Jesus these days as a ghost. A friendly one most certainly, but a ghost nonetheless; somebody not quite real, to good to be true.
For two thousand years ago all the way up to today, people can’t quite see through all the rain and fog of doubt and skepticism — they see only the teacher, the good man, and perhaps a prophet.
Luis says go as far as you can go in your belief about Jesus, and that’s good enough with God.
I tend to agree, but I also know that when the ghost becomes real and when the fog of doubt lifts there is so much more there to see, believe, learn and enjoy.
