If Wishes Were Horses

If wishes were horses
Beggars would ride:
If turnips were watches
I would wear one by my side.
And if if’s and an’s were pots and pans,
The tinker would never work! — 16th Century Nursery Rhyme

My mother-in-law would use another saying, but very similar to the above. “If wishes were fishes, we would all swim in riches.”
The little word “if” plants it’s seed of doubt everywhere. Listen to the devil, “If you are the son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

I think a good New Year’s resolution would be to remove the word “if” from my vocabulary.
Many of us approach 2017 with a little trepidation and a little concern, don’t make it worse by prefacing it with an “if.”
There are much more positive thoughts out there, don’t limit you plans and dreams by starting them with a little word of doubt.
