There is an old American Indian saying that goes something like this: “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.”
These words of wisdom don’t just apply to book-learning or the young. I find some of my best and most beautiful teachers have shown up in my life in my later years. Some of those teachers have been with me the entire time, I just wasn’t ready to absorb their knowledge.
I also find that as I get older my thirst for knowledge has grown significantly. Maybe that is because I’ve finally realized I don’t know everything, in fact very little. Isn’t it amazing that as we mature, we really do mature.
It seems like it should be the opposite. That the young should be ready to learn, and the old become more stubborn and pig-headed, but it doesn’t work that way.
This thirst for knowledge and understanding is not limited to the worldly. As we grow more mature, our search for understanding of the spiritual increases. We want to understand the nature of God and more about our relationship. I find myself reading more, and praying more, and as I do I encounter teachers in almost every person I meet.
I guess one would say I’m finally ready, are you?
