I wish all my readers could look out the window of my writer’s nook at this moment. The Crepe Myrtle outside my window is covered in heavy white snow and its white everywhere as the first snow of the season covers everything. (The picture above is not from my window, nor does it give it justice.)
This will not be an inconvenient snow, the weather is scheduled to warm tomorrow, and it will all be gone by tomorrow night, but for today — schools are closed, stores are empty of milk and toilet paper, and Suzy and I have no plans but to enjoy a true winter wonderland inside and out. We understand the damage blizzards and heavy snow can bring especially to the north. One of the reasons Suzy was ready to leave DC was back to back two foot snows. But this North Carolina snow is beautiful, and the inconvenience is minimal.
This snow also teaches me to ignore the inconveniences of life and enjoy life’s beauty more. I used to worry about getting to work, making arrangements for the children while they were out of school, and travel plans run afoul when it snowed. As I approach middle age, I’ve learned that those inconveniences will be there when the snow melts, very few things in life can’t wait a day or two, but the beauty of the snow will not remain. The taste of snow ice cream and hot chocolate is in my future, and it’s time to heat up the pot of chili.
We rarely in this modern world of constant motion have the opportunity to slow down and marvel. A fluffy white snow forces us to do what we know we should be doing more often.
