Imagine Lives That Are Not Yours

You have to imagine lives that are not yours. — Wendell Berry.

We all know the old adage and song lyrics, “Walk a mile in another man’s shoes.”

Every time I have imagined what it is like to be someone else, I have learned a great deal and have become more compassionate. Yes, I have had people tell me, “There is no way you can know what my life is like, or you can imagine what it is like to be _________.” They are right and I tell them so, but they are also missing the point. I want to understand as much as I can about their lives, so I have better understanding of their life.

I want to know their place in the world, and they mine. That is community.
