An hour with someone you love is everything. — Tommy Tomlinson, Southbound on WFAE.org.
I listened to Tommy Tomlinson the other day interview a very good friend of mine. Tommy is a great interviewer, as well as writer and author. He concluded his show with the above quote while he was talking about spending quality time with his father. I admit my eyes got a little wet.
We can talk about possessions, wealth, status, and acclaim but the most valuable possession any of us has is time, and as Tommy says time with someone you love is everything. You can’t get it back no matter how hard you try.
Do I ever wish while my father was alive I had more time with him. Yes. The times we spent playing catch in the front yard were special, and going to a football game with a man who played college ball on several of the great teams in Tennessee history was priceless. Anytime with my Dad was special, even the last hour of his life when I held his hand and spoke to him even though he couldn’t comprehend a word I said.
Tommy’s words reminded me of all those special times I had, and just as much the times I didn’t have. The times I was too busy or couldn’t be bothered. More importantly, Tommy reminds me that I have lots of family and friends and not to ignore ever the possibility of an hour with them. Such an hour is more valuable than gold, silver, popular acclaim, or any kind of riches one can imagine or dream.
It is everything.
