My Shield Is With God

My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart. — Psalm 7:10.

I’m not sure I’m “upright in heart,” but I think all of us feel the need for a little protection every now and then. The news is full of the rumblings of war, planes are falling from the sky, and in each of our neighborhoods violence is reported on a regular basis. So maybe we should all work on being a little more “upright.”

We don’t think of our heart standing tall, but I suspect David was talking about a different heart than the one that pumps blood. He is encouraging himself and all of us to stand a little taller in our faith. How easy is it to shy away from talking about God, and spending as little time as possible talking to God through prayer, meditation, or through ordinary conversation. We ignore God until we need his “shield.”

If you are like me, my parents were always on me about my posture and learning to “stand up straight.” Maybe I should include in my ever growing list of resolutions an item that reminds me to be “upright in my heart.”
