Wake My Spirit

Wake up my spirit, awake. — Psalm57:8.

What a perfect psalm for a Monday morning. Monday is my day for beginning a new diet, new resolutions, plans to change my life, get some exercise, etc. So this Monday I repeat David’s words, “Wake my spirit,” and add a few of my own — “Give me the strength to accomplish what I truly need to do today.”

Today my mantra has special meaning as I sip on my cup of coffee and read the morning’s news. The “new normal” in our lives seems to be over 1000 lives lost every day, social unrest, and economic uncertainty. Surely, our society won’t accept this as a normal daily diet. Surely, things can’t get worse, can they? Unfortunately the answer is yes to the latter.

My role in what is happening is very small, but to the extent I have a role, today is the day where I must tell myself to wake my spirit. Imagine if we all woke the holy spirit in us and turned our attention to the current state affairs. If we have the faith of a mustard seed we can move mountains, so “Wake my spirit.”
