Grant Me Understanding

… grant me understanding, that I may live. — Psalm 119:144.

There is so much we don’t understand, and there is so much that will always be beyond understanding, so why does the psalmist pray for understanding? Perhaps our poet is not asking for the understanding of the complex, but of the understanding of the basic — How should I live?

I can tell you the answer, your preacher can tell you the answer, so can your parents, your best friend, or a total stranger, but it won’t sink in. Only through God’s grace do we learn and understand that the true way to live is by giving over our life to God and letting God take over.

Once we come to that understanding, we live the life God planned for us all along.
