Is it Legal

And Jesus asked, … “Is it lawful to cure people on the Sabbath, or not?” — Luke 14:4.

Mt grandchildren think I’m a little bit crazy when I tell them about the “blue laws.” Thew were different laws in different states that prohibited the purchase of certain items on Sunday. One of my favorites was you could by a razor on Sunday, but you couldn’t buy blades.

Jesus’s question goes much deeper, of course. There are rules which to maintain civilized society that we should obey, but there are also times when rules get in the way of helping our fellow human beings. There is also a danger when we interpret rules to our own benefit.

I hope you never have to face such a dilemma, but when you do ask yourself am I doing this for me, or am I do this for someone else who’s in need. It’s not a perfect measure, but it’s a good start.

  1. Good afternoon, FYI, the blue laws are still alive and in effect here in Bergen County, NJ. Have a great day, be safe.
