Journey and Marriage

A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to control it. – John Steinbeck.

Steinbeck describes me. On a vacation I want to know where I’m staying, how I’m getting there, and what I am going to do when I get there. Suzy is much more spontaneous. Guess what? Best laid plans always go astray. Perhaps one of my favorite vacations was when the hotel in Mexico said they couldn’t find our reservations and Suzy and William took charge and moved us to a different resort. The next thing I knew I was sipping on a margarita in a swimming pool and enjoying the best view of the ocean I had ever experienced.

Marriage may be the greatest journey any of us ever travel, not to say it isn’t without pitfalls and difficulties. In fact those pitfalls and difficulties are what make a marriage. You are drawn even closer together by surprises, tragedy, and sadness. Whatever you journey, be it marriage or a trip to Mexico, be prepared to lose control. The lack of control will make your adventure all the better.
