Our Own Interests

Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. — Philippians 2:4.

Now the above is not so easy. All of our upbringing, all of our culture, suggests that we listen to our own self-interest first. Yet, once again our faith asks that we look to the interests of others. We are called to to turn away from self-centered motives and to to seek and serve our neighbors first and foremost.

The paradox is that when we do look and serve others, we in fact are looking after our own interests. When we serve others, God takes care of us. Who better to have on your side.
