Vicarious Pleasure

This morning, I sit on my daughter’s backporch enjoying the fresh air, slight breeze, and her dog, Coal, asleep at my feet. It doesn’t get much better. But I say that not because of my wonderful venue to write today’s Pew, but because my children are all well and happy.

We are at Caroline’s watching her children while she and Jeremy are enjoying a much-needed weekend away. Rebecca and Kelley are sending pictures of Jazzfest in New Orleans with their families, and Walter and Missy are attending college graduations for their twins. I don’t need to be in any of those locations, I am as content as a person can be, basking in the happiness of my kids. Besides, my grandkids provide an energetic entertainment uniquely their own.

I think of God right now and how he/she feels when his children are happy. God is enjoying the vicarious pleasure that I am. It is a moment like this where I am confident that God is pleased with his/her creation.
