Pass The Cup

My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me…. — Matthew 26:39.

We all have wished/prayed that something we had to do would go away, even though we know it won’t. Often, the more difficult the task, the more we know we can’t get out of it. Think for a minute, what was the most difficult thing you had to do? Would you still ask the cup be passed?

For the last twenty-five years I have counseled people who are about to go to prison. What I have to tell them isn’t easy, but the devil you know is a lot easier to handle than the one you don’t. Many of those I have counseled have thought, “Let this cup pass from me.” My job is to reassure that they will make it through the experience and come out the better for it. Difficult circumstances can transform us to be the person we were meant to be.

It would be hard for me to counsel Jesus that he would come out better for his experience on the cross, but the rest of humanity is, a result only God could understand at the time.
