What Can I Do?

I called my friend David who was in the hospital and asked the question that I knew didn’t have a good answer, “What can I do for you?” David a comic to the end didn’t pause in his response, “A roll of twenties would be nice.” He, with his great sense of humor to the end, brought reality to my question that his disease had already answered.

Of course, most days there are lots of good answers to the question — physical presence, something special from your kitchen or garden, a kind touch, poetry, a ride to the doctor, the list is as long as one’s arm. And each act of kindness and comfort is special its own unique way. Humankind is at its very best when we have a friend in need.

We also know that God knows exactly what he/she can do for each and every one of us, and he/she stands ready to provide at the perfect time.

I wonder what kind of world we would live in if each morning we all woke asking, “What can I do?”
