Clouds Of Witnesses

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. — Hebrews 12:1.

I love the expression “Cloud of Witnesses,” but it’s not because it’s also the title of one of Dorothy Sayers mysteries. The “cloud of witnesses” refers to believers who have gone before us and are now in heaven. They are not literally watching us from the clouds, but their stories and examples serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement for us as we live our own faith journeys.

The preceding chapter, Hebrews 11, is known as the “faith hall of fame” and lists many examples of such faithful people. The idea of the “cloud of witnesses” is that we are not alone in our faith. We have a great company of believers who have gone before us and who can inspire us to persevere in our own journeys.

My sister joined my cloud of witnesses a few weeks ago. Her courage was an inspiration and now she cheers me on.
