Hidden Treasure

The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden, — Matthew 13:44a.

Before I read today’s bible verse, I knew what I wanted to talk to God about this morning. There are times when my pain and discomfort make it almost impossible to have inner peace. I needed God’s help in calming the fires in my joints and systems. I know my prayers were selfish, but I told myself that if only the pain would subside, I could do a better job at being a better person.

Then I read today’s verse and my thoughts turned away from my needs to the needs of friends and family. My pain was minuscule compared to many others who are reaching that time in life where morning’s are greeted by stiff joints, old injuries, and life-threatning illness. My anxieties about the future are tiny compared to so many in this country who wonder where there next meal will come, for example.

As I began to unearth the treasure God lays before me every day — the opportunities to help my neighbors — my own agenda became God’s. The pain I was so worried about became not so bad. God buries treasure amongst the rocks and stones of loneliness, pain, hunger, etc. We don’t have to search for the treasure, it has its own way of being found in the most unlikely of places.
