A Call To Unity

Lincoln’s timeless words, “when again touched, as surely, they will be, by the better angels of our nature,” will ring particularly true in the days and weeks to come. As we brace ourselves for a potentially close and contentious election, it’s crucial to remember the importance of unity and civility.

Emotions will undoubtedly run high, and disappointment will be widespread. However, it is imperative that we resist the urge to descend into anger, recrimination, and division. Instead, let us channel our energy into reconciliation and peace.

I’ve experienced the highs and lows of both sports and politics. The exhilaration of victory and the sting of defeat are familiar feelings. Yet, through it all, the words of my coaches have echoed in my mind: “Don’t lose your poise, never brag or gloat, and shake your opponent’s hand.” While the latter may not be a realistic expectation in the current political climate, the spirit of sportsmanship—respect, fairness, and grace—is essential.

As we navigate the challenges ahead, let us summon the better angels of our nature. May we prioritize empathy, understanding, and a commitment to the common good. By doing so, we can honor the legacy of Lincoln and ensure a brighter future for our nation.
