One-third the country’s in mourning today, one-third is celebrating like they just won the lottery, and then there is the one third who didn’t vote who are just trying to figure out what day it is. It’s like the world’s biggest game of ‘us vs. them,’ and we just got a Texas-sized whooping. But fear not, my fellow grievers, for we shall rise again, stronger and more determined than ever. If you think you are by yourself in feeling devastated, think of the Alabama fans when they lost to Vanderbilt, or the Irish after Northern Illinois beat Notre Dame, and the Vol supporters after my Hogs beat Tennessee.
Here are a few tips to help you cope with this heartache:
- Indulge Your Grieving Self: Let the tears flow, let the anger simmer. It’s okay to feel like you’ve been punched in the gut by a particularly large political pundit. Just promise us you won’t take it out on innocent bystanders or your pets.
- Seek Support (Wisely): Reach out to your friends and family, but maybe hold off on the political debates for a while. And if you see a yard sign that makes you want to scream, just take a deep breath and drive on.
- Nourish Your Body and Soul: Comfort food is a time-honored tradition for a reason. Load up on mac and cheese, chocolate, and copious amounts of fried chicken. And don’t forget to schedule a massage or a spa day. You deserve it.
- Practice Mindfulness (or at Least Mindless): Meditation can help, but so can binge-watching your favorite show or playing video games. Whatever helps you escape the madness, do it.
- Be Patient with Yourself: Healing takes time. Don’t expect to bounce back overnight. And if all else fails, there’s always retail therapy. Or, you know, more chocolate.
Remember, this too shall pass. Until then, let’s raise a glass (or a box of tissues) to the art of survival.
