You know that I’m a big advocate for time to think. Too often “thinking time” is viewed as “wasted time,” by peers, employers, and ourselves. I disagree. True thought will lead to action, but the power is more in the thought than the action. Caroline gave me for my birthday P.M. Forni’s book The Thinking Life. Like most books of its sort there are several nuggets of gold amongst lots of gravel. One I thought interesting is his discussion of the word “thoughtful.”
Webster’s defines thoughtful as being “full of thought” and also “especially considerate of others, kind.” Its two meanings dovetail into one amazing word. To be “considerate” of others we must first “think” about them. As we follow Luis’s admonition to be “the best” consider the word’s two meanings as sketching the profile of the kind of persons you want to have in your life, and to be in your life.
