My readings today include a story about a lobster. Like many of God’s creatures the growth of a lobster requires it to lose its shell at regular intervals. Whenever a lobster goes through this process it is vulnerable, but its instincts tell it that it must risk itself in order to grow.
During Lent we undergo spiritual reflection and examination. When we do this we make ourselves vulnerable as well. We also grow by way of meditation, study, and reflection. During Lent we are called to lose our comfortable, but restrictive shells, and to grow in new ways of mission and service.
