Reading

One great gift my parents gave me was a love of reading. They always read, and I followed suit with those glorious Red World Books and books I read with a flashlight under the covers. I can always tell when I’m off kilter and that is when I can’t answer the question, “Webb, what are you reading these days?”

What made me think of reading this morning? Well, I got for my birthday an Echo device. One of those gizmo’s where you say, “Alexa, what is the weather like today?” and this soothing voice tells me that if I got outside, I’m going to freeze my buns off. These devices are handy to act as a timer, pull up a recipe, or let me know the score of last night’s ball game since the paper is two days behind.

But I worry. Will my grandchildren and one day great grandchildren get all their information from their watches and sweet sounding robots? Will they stop learning and reading and become at the mercy of obtaining information from computers? I don’t have an answer.

What I do know is that I will continue to encourage my family to read and to enjoy beautiful phrases and creative imagination. Where we will always be at our best is in our creativity and imagination. I don’t think we will ever be able to build a computer that dreams.

Am I being an old phoggy? Probably so, but I will continue to read and dream. It is a gift!
