Until I married Suzy and became an Episcopalian ( A good story by itself) , I didn’t know there was a religious holiday dedicated to pancakes. Not really, but if you love pancakes as much as I do, Shrove Tuesday offers a great excuse to eat. Perhaps, that’s why another name for today is Fat Tuesday.
Some of my best early years involved donning an apron and cooking pancakes, bacon and sausages, and cheese grits for the congregation on Shrove Tuesday. Music was played, children danced, and a good time was had by all before we began the Lenten season. We didn’t celebrate like a New Orleans Mardi Gras, but we did enjoy the evening.
We have come to appreciate events like Shrove Tuesday this last year. Human contact, conversation, and congeniality keep many of us sane, and the absence of family and friends is depressing to say the least. I thought about how grateful I am for those past Shrove Tuesday’s when I read this morning’s cartoon. Enjoy your pancakes tonight. I will.
