The rich and poor have this in common; the Lord is the maker of them all. Proverbs 22:2
The words of Solomon are about the equality of the rich and the poor. On earth, society creates inequalities that are accepted by most as simply “the way things are.” We may each try to perform some form of equalization, to one degree or the other, but when it comes to actualizing God’s kingdom on earth we fall woefully short.
Yet, deep in each of our souls we know that God loves and values each and every one of us equally. The rich and the poor, the black and the white, the gay and the straight, men and women, I could go on and on, and whenever Society oppresses — God’s favor turns to the oppressed. Why? God’s vision of equality compels him to turn to those whose essential humanity has been stripped away in the eyes of the powerful.
Our soul tells each of us to follow God’s vision of equality. Our task, and I include in the “our” each and every one of us. Our task is to make real in our relationships, in our communities, in our social structures, and most importantly in our hearts – God’s vision that values and loves all humanity so deeply and equally.
