The whole way to heaven is heaven itself. — St. Teresa of Avila.
Sometimes life doesn’t feel that heavenly, and we have to try hard to see the grace. When those times hit, we must be on the lookout for glimpses of heaven. We seek them in the darkness so we might bring light to our heart.
Maybe that’s why tomorrow’s coming of Daylight Savings Time is so welcome. Although technically we don’t gain any more sunshine or a second more of time, it seems like there is more light in our life – more time to see heaven. Darkness in spiritual terms brings uncertainty, fear, and anxiety. During Lent we are reminded that God is always with us, in darkness and in light. Heaven is with us, in darkness and in light. And during Lent we are reminded that the power of God cannot be vanquished or diminished by the forces that pressure us and bring us darkness.
When we search for heaven in spiritual darkness, we seek the strength to weather life’s challenges and to help others see the light in darkness. Like daylight savings time we don’t seek more time; we seek more light. God created our souls to experience the eternal, in the midst of the temporal. If we can practice focusing on the eternal over the temporal during Lent, we learn to live in God’s unending day. And we lead those around us to more than a time change – to a light change.
Oh God, the source of eternal light;
Shed forth your unending day upon us
