Kindness

Be kind; everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle. – John Watson

Kindness is a very underestimated virtue. I think it is because it is so easy to be kind. Yet, I encounter dearth of kindness everywhere I go. Perhaps we don’t recognize what Watson says – that everyone we meet is fighting a hard battle. We think of our own struggles and our own battles and consume all the empathy and kindness we possess for ourselves.

The fallacy of this reasoning is that our tank never runs out or short of kindness. We can draw and draw from the well of human kindness and there is still plenty left for the next person we encounter.

As we meditate this weekend let’s think about our neighbor – what battle are they fighting and how can we offer him/her a drink from our well.
