As thy days, so shall thy strength be. – Duet. 33:25
If you know someone who participates in AA or a similar organization you have heard the words – “One day at a time.” After surgery one goes through rehabilitation – “one step at a time.” Anne Lamott talks about writing – “Bird by Bird.” There are many other similar phrases including Bill Murray’s character in “What about Bob” who learned to take “baby steps.”
All these truisms carry one theme that is worth reminding ourselves from time to time – Call on God for the strength to make it through the present day, yesterday is gone and tomorrow has not arrived. Today is full of many pleasures, enjoy. Don’t choose to spend today with a handful of tomorrow’s thorns. For this day only is ours, we are dead to yesterday, and we are not yet born to the morrow. If we bring into today’s thoughts the concerns of the uncertain – what will be and what will never be – our load will be as intolerable as it is unreasonable.
