First Sunday In Lent

Set a watch, Oh Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. – Psalms 141:3

 

Lent is the perfect time to remember our temptation to give quick indulgence to our disappointment or irritation. Think of all the times in your lifetime you wish you could have your words back. It is so hard to meet our fellow men and women, our neighbors, and our own families and show no signs of  impatience and unobservant self-absorption. Lent is a time to practice only kindly feelings of expression and to lock away the quick and sharp tongue.

 

We have a lot going on during Lent  between taking on service to community and fasting, prayer, and meditation. Yet, if we unbridle our tongue we undo a lot of good that is happening. My children learned, like I did, that a bar of soap and a washrag was the immediate response to certain language being uttered in our house. During Lent, carry a subconscious washrag in your pocket and ask God to be available with a bar of soap. It only takes a good scrubbing to make the point.
