Christ … will appear a second time, … but to save those who are eagerly waiting on him. — Hebrews 9:28.
“Waiting on Jesus” sounds like a gospel tune, but as I contemplate the verse in Hebrews I ask, “What am I supposed to do while I’m waiting?”
I’ve spent a lot of time in waiting rooms lately, and I always feel useless. Do I pull out my laptop and write a few words? Do I listen to music? How about tuning in to a lecture on Charlemagne? My Aunt Wanda never went anywhere without a pair of knitting needles and yarn. A few minutes in a waiting room meant a few rows on a sweater or blanket.
The author of Hebrews doesn’t say what we are supposed to do while waiting, but I’m sure waiting is not meant to be idle nothingness. Love thy neighbor, feed the poor, heal the sick, are not the same as sitting on a park bench. I suspect when Jesus does arrive he will ask, “What did you do while you were waiting?”
