Giving thanks always for all things unto God. – EPH 5:20
While I was on sabbatical and experiencing some difficult treatment, a cube mate asked, “How come you aren’t angry with God? You don’t deserve what they are doing to you.” I’m pretty sure that my answer didn’t satisfy my brother, and I don’t remember my exact words, but it probably had something to do with the fact I didn’t think God had anything to do with my situation.
Over the years we learn that we all go through difficult times the only difference is in degree, that all life contains both joy and sorrow, and that our inward failings hidden from the world are the worst of all and don’t deserve the comfort of God that we still receive. During Lent we learn to not only be thankful for the benefits and blessings that are peculiar to ourselves, our family, and friends; but also for all that belongs to our life and being – for joy and sorrow, for health and sickness, for success and disappointment, for virtue and temptation, for all is meant for good.
