As for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do. – Deut. 18:14
I got a note from an old friend the other day. ”He is down in his luck” as the saying goes, and he was having a hard time dealing with the mistakes he had made recently. I picked up the phone and called him and rather than address the issue of the day we just talked about the good times we had back in college, the trouble we barely avoided, the lines we didn’t cross but came damn close, and the times “God took care of drunks and fools” as my grandmother used to say.
We reminded ourselves that sometimes we need to quit kicking ourselves for the mistakes we make and be more thankful for the more serious mistakes God suffered us not to commit. It started to sink home that part of our prayers need to include gratefulness not just for our many blessings, but for God closing the door to some rooms we don’t need to go in.
