Thus my soul before her God, lieth still, nor speaketh more…. – J. J. Winkler
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to close one’s mind to embarrassment, uncertainty, doubt, and anxiety. I known people who acted calm and unmoved by anything, but in truth, they were actually wound too tight and ultimately exploded. The mistake made is to try and accomplish this state of calm with the mind only. True calm, true peace begins with one’s soul. When we meditate, when we pray, try beginning with the heart. Open it up to God, and let it ask the first question. Many teachers of meditation and listening prayer begin with clearing the mind, and they are certainly more trained and experienced than I. But on occasion, when your breast is full of vexations and personal pain, try first opening your heart and disappear in the contemplation of the purpose of your being. You just may be surprised what the heart hears.
