What is wanted is not that we should
find ultimate truth,
nor that we should become secure,
nor that we should have ease,
nor that we should be without hurt,
but that we should love.
The author just about sums it all up in a few words. What do I wish for children or grandchildren? That they be “secure,” be at “ease, be without “hurt,” and as sure as rain I know they won’t make it through life without times of insecurity, discomfort, and hurt. So I am left with the “ultimate truth” the author says we can’t find, but is right there in front of us:
“We should love.”
We cannot escape insecurity, unease, and hurt, but if we love in spite of and in response, we have indeed found “ultimate truth.”
Similar quote from – John McQuiston II Always We Begin Again
What is wanted is not that we should find ultimate truth,
nor that we should become secure,
nor that we should have ease,
nor that we should be without hurt,
but that we should live fully.
Therefore we should not fear life,
nor anything in life,
we should not fear death,
nor anything in death,
we should live our lives
in love with life.
It is for us
to train our hearts
to live in grace,
to sacrifice our self-centered desires,
to find the peace without want
without seeking it for ourselves,
and when we fail,
to begin again each day.
