Suzy and I are in Cleveland being present during another miracle. Our friend Marty just received a double lung transplant and is doing amazingly well at the Cleveland Clinic. Others may say not say it’s not a miracle, but I disagree. Consider the growth in medical science that has occurred in the last fifty years, the skill of surgeons now, and the greatest miracle being the increased willingness of people and families to be organ donors. Without that increased awareness and willingness, transplants are not possible no matter how good the medicine, no matter how skilled the surgeons.
As most of you know I had a transplant four years ago, so I can also tell my friend that she is about to experience something wonderful. She now shares life with another human. His/her lungs now work inside her, to some extent her DNA and blood is shared with him/her, and he/she lives on through her. This is truly a miracle only God sanctions and approves. God is smiling at the generosity of the donor and his smiling, the skill of the surgeons, and at the tremendous courage Marty showed in refusing to simply give up and to continue to fight for life.
We see through this miracle the best of humankind. Hopefully, we can learn from Marty’s and the other parties to this miracle to perform more miracles every day, to make God smile every day and not just in the medical world. We make God smile when we reach to be to be the best we can be whether we succeed or not.
