I feel the need to tell a story you probably have heard before. Many years ago, our Razorback football team lost heartbreaker of a game. I remember sitting in the locker room for longer than usual, so did my teammates. We thought the world had come to an end. We finally made our way back to the football dorm, but when we arrived we heard the music of Motown blaring down the halls. My friend William had run his stereo’s speakers into our common bathroom area, turned up the volume to its maximum, and over the melody of The Four Tops, we heard William shouting, “Come on guys, get your heads up, it’s still Saturday Night.” Not many of my teammates remember who we played or the score that day, but everyone to a man still remembers, “It’s still Saturday night!”
Now you may think I am reciting this story because my beloved Razorbacks got clobbered by Alabama yesterday. You would be partially right, but I have another reason. Some of life’s greatest lessons are learned from our failures, our losses, and our mistakes. William’s reminder about Saturday night wasn’t just about going out on a date with a beautiful coed, perhaps drinking a beer or two, partying with friends, and forgetting about the game. He was giving us a lesson about life.
Win or lose during the day, there is always a Saturday night. Bad things happen, but when we lift our heads and go back out in the world, we will still experience the Saturday nights of life.
