Lent Arrives

Take care that you don’t forget the Lord — Deuteronomy 6:12.

Last night I failed miserably at trying to explain to my ten year old granddaughter about Lent, Shrove Tuesday, and the Ceremony of Ashes. She was having nothing to do with the sacrifice part of Lent, especially when someone else suggested she give up candy for forty days.

I would have done better if I simply told her to use the Lenten season to remember the Lord.

While I am at it remember to get some pancake batter today, and invite a neighbor to share the evening with you tomorrow. If you are going to your local church for Shrove Tuesday, bring a friend. Finally, do a better job  than I did in explaining to your children about the four elements of the season — sacrifice, prayer, service, and study and “don’t forget the Lord.”
