A great pianist was once asked by an admirer, “How do you handle the notes as well as you do?” The artist answered, “The notes I handle no better than many pianists, but the pauses between the notes – that is where the art resides!”
I am confident that I’ve written about the wisdom above. Of course it applies to other talents. A great preacher like Luis used pauses in his sermons to great advantage and impact.
It also applies to life. Einstein would say that it was only in silence could he discover the truths to the universe.
I think our proverb goes deeper. It’s only what is beneath the surface, in the silent gaps, do we see the real human. How one looks, speaks, or performs are our notes, but what we think and feel are our pauses, and who we really are.
Next time you meet someone try to understand their pauses. God’s true creation is not found in the notes, but in the pauses.
