A sign of my age is that it seems that everything is getting louder. Not just music, but it seems that the decibel levels have been elevated everywhere, even when it is merely a conversation between people with opposing views. Someone must have told TV commentators that shouting emphasizes one’s point for arguing and shouting is the norm. My sport of football used to be about blocking and tackling. Now it seems jawing at one’s opponent is a skill to be honed. The same applies to basketball and seems to be creeping into other sports as well. Even at golf tournaments there always is someone screaming “you’re the man’” everytime a golfer tees off.
It also breaks my heart to watch crowds of people screaming at the police, a politician, or anyone in authority. Our ears have an automatic shut off switch when the level of screaming reaches a certain level. Solutions aren’t reached when someone is pouring out hatred at the top of one’s lungs.
