Following up on mindfulness, it is not merely a word or a Buddhist discourse, it is a state of mind, that many Buddhists believe can eliminate all suffering.
Now as someone who prays for World peace, and even asks for it every year from Santa Claus, the possibility that mindfulness ends all suffering got my attention.
We all understand the concept of being present in the moment and that is is a part of mindfulness, but it also includes knowing what is happening externally and internally.
It means being alert to our motives, and willing to change each and every unwholesome thought we have to wholesome thoughts, emotions, and actions.
During Lent’s prayers and meditations we begin to take “baby steps” towards a state of mindfulness. Eliminating suffering does come but not for a while, but a little relief begins on day one.
