“Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only
you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.” — Carl Sandburg
you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.” — Carl Sandburg
I was going to write a meditation about Tennessee Ernie Ford and his classic song, Sixteen Tons, but I decided it can wait when I ran across Sandburg’s quote.
At first glance one might think that he is suggesting to be selfish with your time, but on reflection I don’t think so. I think he is suggesting that our time on earth is a precious commodity and we should be be conscious and reflective on how we spend it on certain activities. Very seldom do people insist on your time for your own betterment. More likely, they want your coinage for their own purposes.
God gives us the free will to spend our time in any way we choose. He does call us to spend our time in service and love, but he never insists. As Sandburg says each and every one of us determines how we spend our time. Are you letting others spend your time or are you in control?
It is easy to spend all our time mining coal for others, but in the end we just are deeper in debt and owe more time to the company store and not to God.
Have a good weekend. W.
