“It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels.” ― Saint Augustine
Another great dividend we may expect from confiding our defects to another human being is humility — a word often misunderstood. . . . it amounts to a clear recognition of what and who we really are, followed by a sincere attempt to become what we could be. — TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 58
As an aside, when I was growing up and dreamed or thought of angels, I never envisioned a male angel. They were always women or girls. Wonder why that was?
Humility is a misunderstood word according to the twelve steps. That may be true but we know it when we see it and personally I think it is a trait we should all seek to learn and practice. We definitely could use a large dose of it in DC these days.
It is always good to remember the words of Micah every day and on every occasion: “O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” — Micah 6:8
